My mother in law said my son is %26quot;flat footed and I should take him to the doctor for special shoes to make his feet have an arch. Should I?
Do I need to buy my %26quot;flat footed%26quot; baby special shoes?
Definitely ask your pediatrician about any concerns you have for your child.
However, all babies are born with flat feet. Check out this link that explains:

Reply:Bring it up at the next visit to the pediatricians office. They may refer you to a podiatrist so they can look at his feet. My daughter has an arch, but she walks flat footed. They told me just to purchase sturdy shoes...no shoes that don%26#039;t offer ankle support. They said it would be ridiculous to try to correct it at this age unless she was having problems walking.
Reply:Talk to you doctor about this.
Reply:When my daughter started walking her babysitter said the same thing to me. Her foot isn%26#039;t completely flat, but she does not have much of an arch, just like her dad. Anyway, I asked the doctor and he said just try to look for regular shoes that have good arch support and there was no reason to buy special shoes at that age. Talk with your doctor and see what they say. Chances are mother in law is being a little over protective.
Reply:yes, i was the same way when i was born and you will need to do that to prevent a lot of problems with his feet in the future and the way he will wear his shoes. but it will be more beneficial ince he is walking so the support can be molded from the pressure he%26#039;s putting on his feet.
Reply:Your mother in law could also be totally wrong...just mention it at the pediatricians during the next visit and buy fitted shoes at Striderite.
Reply:How old is your baby? All babies have flat feet. The arch does form until the 2-3rd year of life. Your doc will confirm this.
Reply:I doubt it. Has the Dr noticed? How old is the baby? When my daughter was at her 1 yr checkup the Dr had her walk across the room and noticed how she was walking-then looked at her feet and said she had valgus feet which means the bone is turned a little (it can be worse) and she walks on the inside of her feet. The Dr said she needs a really good shoe like stride rites. My chiropractor said the same but went on to say everyone should wear a good shoe with good support.
Ask the Dr about it but she probably just needs a shoe w/good support.
Reply:How old is your baby? Most babies are flat footed because they have have extra fat that fills out the arch in their foot. Just make sure that if he is walking or getting ready to walk, to get him good supportive shoes (that goes for all babies, not just flatfooted ones). Take him to Stride Rite if you have one in your area. They are great. They will find the perfect shoe for your little guys feet. Good luck!
