Help Tying Shoes?

I am about to teach my 5 year old to tie his shoes. Could you guys please give me some helpful advice? Please tell me what worked for your child - - any special songs or rhymes or ideas that will help?

Thanks!

Help Tying Shoes?
I used the loop, swoop, and pull method.
Reply:Yes, I have used a successful method, that was designed for the special needs population but works for anybody. We only work 1 step at a time but that maybe too easy for him

Get 2 different color 12" pipe cleaners work with them first Do 5 repetitions a day

The cat is black

The mouse is white

The cat is on the left

The mouse is on the right

#1

The cat crosses over

#2

The mouse crosses on top

#3

The mouse runs under

Pull the tails till they stop

#4

The cat arches his back

In a great big loop

and catches his tail

so it does not droop

#5

The mouse is scared

and runs all around

#6

Then he runs through the hole

so he is safe and sound

#7

pull

this is recommended for ages 4-8
Reply:This can be a little hard for young ones, the thing is that once you learn to tie shoes, you never forget. I always played the rabbit ears game. Make two rabbit ears , hold the ears in each hand and push one 'EAR" under the other and pull.Kids learn better if it is a game. Others may know a better way. remember to be patient, sometimes it may take a while but he will soon do this on his own. Good luck!
Reply:I taught my boys to tie basic knots first (at around age three). My older son (5) started asking about the bows, so I showed him. I used bigger, thicker string to show so he could see it better, and practice....it was actually a cheap jump rope!
