What shoes are best for track?

My daughter is a freshman, she has never been in track before, but joined yesterday. The season starts next week and I have no idea what type of shoes she needs. She has soccer and softball shoes, would these work or are there special running shoes she should have? She signed up for the 100 and 200 meters.

What shoes are best for track?
I would suggest taking her to a running store (like fleet feet- you an find a store nearby hopefully at www.fleetfeet.com) Running stores can assess what type of running shoe you need- does your daughter have flat feet? Supinate (roll out when she runs) or Pronate (roll in) etc. and then suggest a shoe that suppports that. If you can't find a store like that and have to go to just an athletic store (sports authority and such) have your daughter go with you and also have her wear running socks. Have her try on different brands (I'd try Asics, New Balance, Adidas and Nike) and actually jog around the store a bit to see how they feel. You have to be comfortable in them. Sometimes you actually need to buy a 1/2 size to a size bigger in running shoes so that you aren't rubbing your toes on the end. Buy what feels good, not by the size you usually wear. (This is why a running store would be helpful- they can really tell you how they should feel and where your toes should be) Even though Nike's are by far and away the most popular, I find that they are a company based more on style and look than support, comfort and reliability. I have Asics and they are a great neutral pair that aren't too narrow, are comfortable and very supportive. I would consider them a top brand in running.

As far as track spikes; unlike running shoes, spikes should fit tighter (not a size bigger.) They are meant to feel super light and aren't supportive at all. They are just for competition. You might want to hold off and have the coach suggest a type for her, or you can go with something common and simple- I had Nike Zoom- they ran about 40-60 I believe and were great. She will need both pairs- one to train and one to compete in. You can't compete (comfortably) in regular running shoes in the 100 and 200. Only the longer distance runners wear running shoes and even then, a lot of them run with spikes.

I have run for over 15 years and ran track and cross country for 7 years- high school and college. Hopefully this helps. Track is a great sport to get involved in!!
Reply:Go to your nearest Sporting Goods store and tell them you need track shoes they will show you what you need. These shoes have spikes on the bottom for better traction. Those are only in races. She should wear sneakers for practice.
Reply:She*s gonna need a good pair of running shoes to train in and spikes to race in (spikes she can buy later). I have had kids in grade 9 use there sneakers to race in and didn*t buy spikes till 2nd year because the parents and the kids weren*t sure they*ll stick with it and didn*t want to put out that kind of money until they were sure. The spikes do not have to be expensive(many pairs are) especially if this is her 1st year and she may not continue or even like the sport. You didn*t say how serious she was about it, it would be at that time I would look into buying racing spikes, then she should go to a sports store get fitted and get one recommended, even ask the coach or other athletes she trains with what they have and like best. She may be able to try a friends pair and see if she likes those or something else.
Reply:Try Track Shoes !!!!!! They're excellent and serve their purpose !
Reply:shes going to need running shoes. Soccer or softball shoes would probably hurt her.

Check with the coach or other runners, see if the track they run on allows cleats. If she's doing sprints, she will get an advantage from cleats, distance runners dont use them much, except for off track running. The coach can probably recommend a store that sells running shoes also.
Reply:lite
Reply:Nike,get them with air shocks.
Reply:well i run track and surely get track spickes there kinda like soccer spikes but at the bottom there like sharp spikes at the end you can get them at big 5 just ask for help
Reply:You should get her running shoes. Usually in the shoe store there will be a section called running.I have asics and they work very well. You should get a pair that will absorb the shock when you run.
Reply:she needs track spikes...look at most sports stores like sports authority, dick's, and mvp sports...they are like really lighweight sneakers with spikes and grips on the bottom, and cost about 30-40 bucks
Reply:No they have to be good shoes or some just $100 shoes lol
Reply:The best shoe for her to use is NIKE but get the track shoes with the metal spikes and get an extra pack of spikes because they will run down fast, the reason that these shoes are the best is because that put metal spikes under your toes and towards the middle of your foot and it will improve her time also. They run about $80-$100 but most sports stores that are local will give you a discount if its for a local school. I know that Sage Sport does and im from Mount Airy and i ran track for North Surry High School.
Reply:Hello,

I would recommend that you get her a pair of running shoes, as the soccer and softball shoes could hurt her feet or legs as a sprinter (100m %26amp; 200m). You should be able to get her a reasonable pair of light-weight trainers or flats for the season that she could use in practice %26amp; meets.

Most running shoe speciality stores can help out with sizing, shoe-type, and fit. The link below has some more information and tips to help out.

A word of caution...make sure she chooses a shoe on fit %26amp; not the "name". I'm a Cross-Country coach and I try to stress to my runners that it's not a fashion show..yet many kids will still wear shoes that are too loose or too tight because of the shoe's style or color.

Best of luck!
